About the Subs Club series

After the death of their friend Hal at the hands of an irresponsible dom, submissive friends Dave, Kamen, Miles, and Gould band together to form the Subs Club—an organization seeking to expose dangerous local doms. The club slowly evolves as romances blossom, loyalties are tested, and tensions mount in a community already struggling for unity in the wake of Hal’s death.

From domestic discipline to knife play to fashion paraphilia, and from family drama to new jobs to first loves, the members of the Subs Club explore life’s kinks inside and outside of the bedroom as they attempt to let go of the past and move forward.

My Review: If you’re looking for a book with fascinating characters and super hot, kinky sex, you definitely can’t go wrong if J.A. Rock’s name is on the cover. After reading The Subs Club, I had a feeling that this series was going to become one of my all-time favorites, and Pain Slut is definitely confirming that suspicion! (Full review here4-5-of-5)

PainSlut_600x900Honestly, I’m ready to take a step back from the Subs Club. Making the kink world a safer place for subs is the sort of bandwagon I’d have boarded as an idealist in my early twenties, but now I’m a pragmatist in my late twenties. I prefer to focus on adopting and raising a child.

But unexpected factors inevitably derail my plans. Like Drix Seger—attractive and the first genuine sadist I’ve encountered. If I were not in the process of renouncing my masochistic ways and becoming the normal, responsible potential father the adoption agency wants to see, Drix and I might do well together. But he has a foolish name and belongs to a cult of vampyres, and I am quitting kink. So why does Drix’s infatuation with blood and biting make me so hot I can’t think straight? And why, when he looks at me, does he seem to see something beyond a basket case with a stick up my ass?

Can I start a new phase in my life without leaving part of myself behind? Please send help.

—Miles

The SUV Scene

I’m not an outliner at all. But with the Subs Club series, I did have to do some planning. And one of the things I planned ahead of time was the characters’ kinks. I was especially excited for Miles’s kink scenes, because he’s the first truly masochistic character I’ve written, and I love writing about pain. So I had this big list of activities I wanted him to try and equipment I wanted him to use…I was ready.

But Miles’s most important sex scene was one I’d never planned on writing. Basically, Miles has rough sex with his partner, Drix, in the hatch of Drix’s SUV. Miles, who’s uptight and intent on trying to control his environment, has done any number of hardcore kinky things, but he’s out of his depth when it comes to letting go and forging an emotional connection with his partner. He really likes rough sex, but it’s easier for him to ask for things that involve gear and equipment—things he has quantifiable knowledge of—than to ask, “Hey, will you fuck me really hard?” He sometimes uses the trappings of kink to acquire a certain level of detachment from the person he’s playing with.

But one day, Drix calls Miles at work and says he’s picking him up for a lunch break, and instead of lunch, Drix fucks Miles in the back of his car in a way that 1) forces Miles to acknowledge some of the things he wants but doesn’t know how to ask for 2) makes him stay present and aware of his connection with Drix 3) doesn’t let him hide behind his encyclopedic knowledge of kink, or behind gear. It ended up being my favorite of Pain Slut’s sex scenes to write, and it didn’t even involve all the torture devices I was so excited about.

It’s always cool as a writer when something unexpected happens during the writing process. And I think the SUV scene helped reinforce for me that Pain Slut really isn’t a book about masochism—it’s about different types of connection. It’s about friendship, family, self-acceptance, and the ways love can surprise us.
