New to the THIRDS universe? It’s an alt-contemporary world where animal shifters walk among us, created by a form of biological warfare. Now there are Humans and Therians, and the latter have their own special police force: the THIRDS. You can check out more information on Charlie Cochet’s THIRDS HQ site!
Catch a Tiger by the Tail, by Charlie Cochet
Series: THIRDS, Book 6
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Genre: Paranormal, Romance, Action/Mystery, Gay (M/M)
Rating: 4 out of 5
Calvin Summers and Ethan Hobbs have been best friends since childhood, but somewhere along the line, their friendship evolved into something more. With the Therian Youth Center bombing, Calvin realizes just how short life can be and no longer keeps his feelings for his best friend a secret. Unfortunately, change is difficult for Ethan; most days he does well to deal with his selective mutism and social anxiety. Calvin’s confession adds a new struggle for Ethan, one he fears might cost him the friendship that’s been his whole world for as long as he can remember.
As partners and Defense Agents at the THIRDS, being on Destructive Delta is tough at the best of times, but between call-outs and life-threatening situations, Calvin and Ethan not only face traversing the challenges of their job, but also working toward a future as more than friends.
“Question one: are you all screwing each other? Question two: how can I get in on the action?” – Austen Payne, “Rise & Fall” (THIRDS, Book 4)
Okay, we’ve known this book was coming for ages, but it’s finally here… Calvin and Hobbs’ book! Yes, this now means that 75% of Destructive Delta are in relationships with each other, but I don’t care because CALVIN AND HOBBS! Ugh, if anyone deserves to be happy together, it’s those two boys.
Catch a Tiger was a nice pause in the THIRDS universe, after back-to-back(-to-back) action, danger, and injury. Yes, there’s still action here, but there’s a lot more character development, and Charlie starts setting up for some Big Things to come.
I love the THIRDS series. It’s fun, action-packed, and hella sexy. And while the series is still definitely centered on Dex and his partner Sloane, it was nice to finally shift focus over to Ethan and Calvin. Especially since Charlie has been teasing us recently with some backstory flash fiction (the first time Hobbs talks to Calvin and a present-day short with C&H going back to their old high school).
Over the years Calvin had gotten to know every little hitch in his partner’s breath and what it meant. He could read Ethan Hobbs like an open book.
I wouldn’t say these books are perfect. They’re a bit generic in some ways, and very predictable. But they’re fun. Absolute, delightful book candy. They are the cheesy doodles of the book world: delicious, addictive, but probably not very nutritional.
Definitely can’t wait for Book 7. And for anyone else who’s eagerly awaiting it with me, check out this glimpse into Dex’s past from Charlie’s THIRDS Thursday collection, which offers some teasers for what’s to come!
