Dex and Sloane are back, and after the way Book Six ended… well, let’s just say it was a huge relief to finally pick this one up!

From the very start of Smoke and Mirrors, Charlie is showing us exactly why these books are so enjoyable: she combines gripping, heart-racing action and an utterly delightful villain with Dex’s usual sarcasm and wit. And then BAM, she throws a curveball in our face, and the book is off to an amazing start with me sitting on the edge of my seat, breathlessly reading as fast as I can.

That’s the entire book. It’s action-packed and one surprise after another, and just when you think, “Okay, sexytimes, everything is going to be okay…” the plot takes a sharp twist and Dex and Sloane and their team are thrown back into danger. It should be exhausting, but it’s definitely not. Instead, it was fun and highly entertaining, and I found myself so curious and enraptured by what was happening to Dex that three hours passed, it got dark outside, I missed two phone calls, and I never even noticed.

That’s how good this book is.

Now, I did spot a few times where Charlie had to cover her tracks, where things that had happened in previous books had to be quickly amended so they fit in with where the plot was going now. Most of those were pretty skillfully done, given the circumstances, but a few were kind of sloppy. I don’t think a casual reader would notice, though, but hardcore Thirds Nerds might.

But the final verdict is that this book was amazing, and it was everything I hoped it would be AND MORE. The sex with Dex and Sloane was as passionate as ever, Dex was his usual goofball self, Cael and Ash were delightful, and it had all of the comforts that I crave in a Thirds novel. But the way Charlie has just changed the entire game for us? YES PLEASE. Someone please give me a release date for Book 8 already… I need more! NOW!

Charlie Cochet is an author by day and artist by night. Always quick to succumb to the whispers of her wayward muse, no star is out of reach when following her passion. From adventurous agents and sexy shifters, to society gentlemen and hardboiled detectives, there’s bound to be plenty of mischief for her heroes to find themselves in, and plenty of romance, too!
