not your sidekick cb leeWelcome to Andover, where superpowers are common, but internships are complicated. Just ask high school nobody, Jessica Tran. Despite her heroic lineage, Jess is resigned to a life without superpowers and is merely looking to beef up her college applications when she stumbles upon the perfect (paid!) internship—only it turns out to be for the town’s most heinous supervillain. On the upside, she gets to work with her longtime secret crush, Abby, whom Jess thinks may have a secret of her own. Then there’s the budding attraction to her fellow intern, the mysterious “M,” who never seems to be in the same place as Abby. But what starts as a fun way to spite her superhero parents takes a sudden and dangerous turn when she uncovers a plot larger than heroes and villains altogether.

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing C.B. Lee, author of Not Your Sidekick.

Hi C.B., thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

lee-not-your-sidekick-badgeHello there! Thank you for having me here today. I’m C.B., a bisexual woman who grew up on the California coast. I’m a first generation Asian American and am so excited to write more about characters whose backgrounds are like my own. My current novel is Not Your Sidekick, where overshadowed Jess tries to prove herself despite not having superpowers, and ends up working for a supervillain. She and her crush, Abby, work together and end up uncovering a sinister plot and that some heroes are not what they seem.

Tell us the highlight of your writing career (so far).

My local public library invited me to come talk to their service club, a group of high school volunteers who are passionate about books and work in the library. It was amazing how they reacted to me because I grew up in this area, just like they did. I talked a little bit about my parents being immigrants and dissuading me from pursuing anything creative, and how I pursued writing as a career.

I never felt so humbled and inspired when a group of girls, also Asian American told me how excited they were, that they had never met a published author before with the same background. I had such a wonderful time reading from my novel and signing books and talking to them about writing and their hopes and dreams; I was definitely inspired by them and it was really powerful for me to hear a young person say that they want to be a writer, too.

C.B. Lee is a bisexual writer, rock climber, and pinniped enthusiast from Southern California. A first-generation Asian American, she is passionate about working in communities of color and empowering youth to be inspired to write characters and stories of their own. Lee’s debut novel Seven Tears at High Tide was published by Duet Books in 2015 and named a finalist in the Bisexual Books Awards. This summer, C.B. was named to Lambda Literary’s Writers Retreat for Emerging LGBTQ Voices.
