Niall has a boyfriend. Dan. His hot, beefy, bad-ass cop boyfriend, with protective instincts galore and an inexplicable weakness for a certain flighty – and flexible – dance major. Things are getting hot and heavy and Niall is realizing exactly how cherished and wanted and safe he is in Dan’s hands. And he thinks he just may have met the one man he can trust with his secret. But he hesitates, and the decision is taken out of his hands. Dan knows. Will he run? Or will Niall have the nerve to stick around long enough to find out?

I don’t think I’ve made it any secret that I adore Claire Davis’ and Al Stewart’s short stories. I always feel like I’ve gotten more story than is actually written because their characters feels complete and they’re always given such satisfying arcs.
Billie Jean is no exception. This is a sweet, sexy story with a bit of an edge that I found absolutely delightful.
Niall and Dan have already been dating for six months by the time this story starts. I thought this was a brilliant move on the authors’ part as it establishes them as a couple with a built-in level of trust. This is essential to part of the story, as Niall is keeping a secret from Dan that he’s desperate to reveal but unsure of how his manly, cop boyfriend will take it.
The build up to Niall’s reveal is deliciously hot. Dan isn’t nearly as strait-laced as one would think a cop might be, despite being extremely protective (with good reason, as we shall see) of the rather more free-spirited Niall. The chemistry between them is charged with a mix of sex and respect, and when Dan finally learns Niall’s secret it’s both crazy sexy and really lovely.
There is a sub plot here that reveals the cause of Dan’s over protective nature, and it manages to fit quite effortlessly into this short story. It’s fairly low-angst but it does serve to underscore the incredible tenderness and love between the two men.
I haven’t always been a fan of short stories, but Claire Davis and Al Stewart just make them so damn enjoyable that I’ve become a convert. If you haven’t read anything by them yet, this would be a great start, and if you have, then you already know you’re in for a treat.
I live in the beautiful UK and grew up in the Midlands. Just a very ordinary person.
I am originally from an enormous housing estate in the south of England.
Early influences include male ballet dancers or anyone in tights, Robin Hood, and all my sister’s boyfriends.
I’ve written poetry from a young age but fairly recently moved on to books about ordinary people.
I’m crippling awful at talking about myself but I can draw a horse.
