While She Sleeps, by Katya Harris
Publisher: Less Than Three Press
Release Date: March 29, 2017
Rose has succumbed to the curse laid on her as a baby. She has pricked her finger on an enchanted spindle, and is now doomed to sleep for a hundred years. But though her body is locked in slumber, her mind is wide awake, her spirit capable of traveling the kingdom that is going on without her. Invisible, she watches the lives and loves of her people, a silent witness to a world she cannot take part in.
The son of a successful merchant, Micah is a farm hand now that his family had fallen on hard times. It’s a simple, if boring life, but any income is better than none. But boring becomes shocking when he sees Rose—and positively disconcerting when her disembodied spirit takes up residence in his head.
Then news reaches them that the king is planning to marry Rose off despite her sleeping state…
Being a princess has brought me nothing but misery. My parents were so worried the Dark Queen would strike at me early they took away what little life I had. Now my spirit is freer than my body ever was or likely will be. I will say and do whatever I want.
And with these words, this story was born.
While She Sleeps is a story inspired by the part of the Sleeping Beauty narrative after the princess pricks her finger on the spindle and falls asleep. Honestly, however, not knowing that wouldn’t change a great deal in this story.
It’s a more erotic story than I usually read, so while I didn’t enjoy it overly much, there’s no reason why people who are more inclined towards reading that wouldn’t enjoy this immensely.
Rose has become almost a folktale in the twenty odd years since she’s been asleep. She’s never been able to be seen or heard by another person until she comes across Micah who, perhaps predictably, turns out to be her true love.
The thing I most liked from this story was the way the princess freed herself from social constraints, best articulated in the quote above. It honestly set the tone for the whole story, short as it was.
Katya Harris lives in the UK with her family, two pet rats, and the smuggest ex-stray cat in the history of the world. An unashamed book addict, she also loves writing her own stories and bringing the characters that inhabit her head to life. Her favorite genres are science-fiction, fantasy, urban fantasy, steampunk, erotica…basically everything apart from non-fiction. When she’s not writing or reading, she’s binge-watching TV and anime shows, and knitting or crocheting.
