Colin Spencer is a tattoo artist with a past he’d prefer to keep a secret. Actually, he has a few secrets that he’d rather people didn’t know about, which is why Colin doesn’t do commitment. But when a shy sailor approaches him at the gym, Colin finds this guy pushing all his buttons.

Growing up in a conservative family, then escaping with the Navy, Daniel Moore is an unsure virgin who feels like he can’t share his true self with anyone. Seeing Colin—and his tattoos—at the gym are the sign Daniel needs to finally get those tattoos he’s always wanted, and maybe try his hand at flirting.

As Colin and Daniel spend more time together, their awkward hesitations turn into a deep passion neither expected. But with both men harboring secrets, will their relationship be able to survive their insecurities and become something beautiful?

Back Piece is a sexy, emotional journey of two people learning to love and finding acceptance for who they really are.

Back Piece is exactly what the blurb says, and so much more. I do love me some L.A. Witt, and this time she’s not only delivered on great characters, but a great story with so much heart.

Secrets held by both Colin and Daniel are theirs to share when the time is right but only with the right person. Finding the right person to share any secret with is so important. Learning to trust that person with everything that you are, everything that you have inside you… it’s a vulnerable position to be in. Something that Witt did so well with Back Piece is the communication, depth of trust, and honest reactions. During those times when secrets are shared, when emotions are running at their highest, the tension in that room that Colin or Daniel were feeling, I felt that too. I felt that relief you get when you’ve finally, finally, been given the chance and found the person you can trust to share your deepest secrets with and then realize that you were right to trust them. You were really as safe as you hoped. It’s a heady feeling.

This was a really emotional ride and vulnerabilities aside, there were also moments when I wanted to throw my iPad out the window. Conservative parents a difficult characters to read, I can’t imagine how hard they’d be to write. I wanted to take up my sword and fight for Daniel so hard. I have such a hard time reading that kind of hatred and I wanted to lash out so badly.

But there were a lot of moments that I loved so much. Moments of UST that build and build into the best first kiss I’ve read in a really long time. The tension and the anticipation. The rolling thoughts that go through their minds while waiting for one of them to either make a move, or get up the courage to do it first. All that nervousness. All of that excitement. It was right there like I could touch it. Simply beautiful. And the sex? I don’t normally make it a point to mention the sex in books but let me tell you… hot hot hot. It’s steamy and wonderful, tender and full of discovery. Colin and Daniel’s sex life is a very important piece of the story and it is used quite well.

I do with there was a bit more with either pairs friends. Colin’s friends are these guys on the periphery that I’m sure we’ll get to know later in the series… I just hope that we’ll also get to know Daniel’s friends as well. Daniel especially seems to have some great guys at his back. I’d love to know their stories.

Overall, I loved this story. It was a little bit long but there is a depth of feeling I found in the telling that struck a cord with me. I’m excited for more books in this series because the tone and feel of this one has left me wanting… wanting more of them, more of their friends, a more solid foundation for their relationship. More of everything.

L.A. Witt is an abnormal M/M romance writer who has finally been released from the purgatorial corn maze of Omaha, Nebraska, and now spends her time on the southwestern coast of Spain. In between wondering how she didn’t lose her mind in Omaha, she explores the country with her husband, several clairvoyant hamsters, and an ever-growing herd of rabid plot bunnies.
