Hello and welcome to Just Love vs. El in which we will ask her all the awkward questions and do some promo for her new book Thaw that is coming out today.
There’s also a cool giveaway, so make sure to read till the end to find out more.
We hope you’ll have a blast reading and as much fun as we had by coming up with the questions.
Oh and this is El— You know, in case you didn’t know who’s running this blog and making all our lives brighter and warmer and things —>
JL: Jumping right into your new release, El, where did the idea of Gabrielle in Thaw come from? Is she based on any real models/actresses?
El: Gabrielle is actually very loosely modeled on a combination of Meghan Markle (an actress and also Prince Harry’s super gorgeous girlfriend) and singer Alicia Keys. But only in terms of who I pictured when writing her… personality-wise, she’s not based on anyone!
JL: You reference both Rent and Hamilton your books. Tell us a bit about your love of musicals
El: Living in NYC, it’s pretty hard to escape Broadway. Even if you’re not a fan of theater, it’s everywhere. But I’ve been a fan of theatre—and musicals specifically—since my grandmother took me to see Annie on Broadway when I was 8 or 9. I’ve seen some amazing shows since then, and listening to Idina Menzel in Wicked, or Lin-Manuel Miranda in Hamilton, is pretty incredible. So I knew that this series would revolve around Broadway (and specifically a 20th anniversary production of Rent) from the start, because to me theater seems like such an integral part of NYC!
JL: What can we expect from the rest of the Seasons of Love series?
El: Book Three, Heat Wave, is out on July 31. It follows Sara, a woman who is discovering her bisexuality with her friend Laura, who’s the make-up artist for the Rent production. It’s basically two badass, sexy, kinky ladies and their summer-fling-turned-something-more. Then the autumn book is Changing Colors (October 23), which is another M/M and is about Tony, the director of Rent, and his second chance romance with Gee, a gender non-conforming man who teaches Tony that there’s more to life than worrying about what other people think. And of course you’ll see characters from Whiteout and Thaw in both of those!
JL: Ooh, sounds like we’ve got something to look forward to! Stepping away from Seasons of Love for a minute, you’ve also got your diving romance, Heels Over Head, coming out on May 29th. What made you want to write about divers in the first place?
El: Heels Over Head was a combination of my pre-existing love of diving, the summer Olympics, and being unemployed. Which is to say, I wrote 100,000 words in less than six weeks while crying because Tom Daley didn’t win a gold medal. It started out as a fun distraction, because I adamantly swore I wasn’t writing a sports romance, but a lot of people were extremely encouraging and helped prompt Jeremy and Brandon’s story to completion! It’s some of my favorite tropes: enemies to lovers, teammates, and found family.
JL: We are here for enemies to lovers! Let’s hope May comes around fast 🙂
Now on to some super-serious questions…
What are you up to when you’re not running Just Love and wrangling your misbehaved reviewers?
El: Dude, that’s like 99% of my free time right there! *cryinglaughing* No, I love you all, seriously. Um, lately it’s been All About the Hockey, which is the most unfortunate time-suck in existence. I work a boring nine-to-five, and now that the weather is nicer I’m looking forward to getting out in the city and exploring more! There’s always something amazing happening in NYC. I’m also slowly falling in love with Pittsburgh (the city), which is the combined result of my friend Anna Zabo and Pittsburgh (the hockey team).
JL: What secret talent do you have?
El: I am double-jointed in most of my major joints. Does that count as a talent? I don’t know, I’m not actually all that talented, to be honest.
JL. Let’s talk shifters: Merpony or Werepanda?
Holy crap but seriously, now I want, like, a fat cuddly dude who is secretly a werepanda and he is just the nicest dude, and his boyfriend brings him bamboo and pets his ears when he’s shifted and they cuddle together on the couch and watch, like, Kung Fu Panda together. GIMME.
JL: Okay, that actually sounds freakin’ adorable *furiously searches for werepanda fiction*
What is one thing you would like to accomplish before you die (personally or professionally)?
El: Personally, I’d like to finally cross the last few countries on my To Visit list off (Egypt, Peru, Chile, and Russia). Professionally… well, the New York Times bestseller list would be kinda nice. *dreamy sigh* But mostly I just want to be happy, and have friends around me and family who support me, and good books on my shelf to read. That’s it.
JL: That sounds awesome 🙂
Well, we’re almost done here but before you go, there are two very important things we absolutely need to know about you –
Have you ever gone cow tipping?
Why are the Flyers the best team in the NHL?
OKAY BUT ONE I HAVE NEVER GONE COW-TIPPING but me and my friends once created this elaborate plan to sneak a cow into our high school and up to the second floor as a senior prank because a) Texas y’all, and b) dumb teenagers. It never panned out, alas.
And I think you misspelled “Penguins” there, buddy. But if we’re talking about why the Pens are the best team in the NHL, I’ll just point to that Big Shiny Silver Cup that they won last year. When was the last time the Flyers won it? Before I was even born?
Finally: why were there no questions about barbed peens, I feel really let down by this interview. (JL: We thought it was inappropriate to bring up that conversation, that’s why ;-P)
But for real, I love you all, thank you so much! ❤
JL: No, thank you!!
Thaw, by Elyse Springer
Series: Seasons of Love, Book Two
Publisher: Riptide Publishing
Release Date: April 24, 2017
Abigail is content with her quiet life as a librarian. But when she’s invited to a high-profile charity auction, she finds herself dancing with one of the most beautiful women she’s ever met. Abby’s sure she’ll never see her again, but then Gabrielle calls and asks her on a date. And soon after, another.
Supermodel Gabrielle Levesque has a reputation as the Ice Queen—cold and untouchable—except she warms up whenever she’s with Abby. Only Abby isn’t interested in the heat between them; she’s asexual, and she’s worried that admitting as much to Gabrielle might spell the end of their blooming romance.
They’re two different women from two very different worlds, but Abby knows she can love Gabrielle. Her passion for books, travel, and theater prove there’s more to the Ice Queen than meets the eye. But they’ll have to overcome Abby’s fears—and Gabrielle’s own threatening secrets—in order to find their way to love.
