The Gryphon King’s Consort, by Jenn Burke
Publisher: Dreamspun Beyond
Release Date: Dec 15, 2017
Love takes flight.
The sudden death of the Gryphon King throws the kingdom of Mythos into uncertainty, and Crown Prince Luca rushes both his coronation and an arranged marriage to a man he’s never met. Eirian is young and idealistic, and while they both want what’s best for their people, their philosophies couldn’t be more different. While Luca believes in honoring tradition, Eirian is determined to infuse modern values into their kingdom of magical creatures. When given the choice between loyalty to his husband and his own crusade, Eirian makes a decision that might doom their marriage.
Still, Luca is committed to making their union work, and that means forgiving his brash consort. But when Eirian becomes the target of a deadly conspiracy, Luca must act fast—or forever lose the chance to explore their burgeoning love.
If arranged marriages, shifters and political maneuverings sound like something you’d enjoy, I definitely recommend reading The Gryphon King’s Consort.
When Luca loses his best friend, mentor and king in what is presumed to be a tragic accident, he suddenly finds himself next in line to the throne. In order to present an image of trust and stability, Luca decides to move up the timeline for his arranged marriage and settle into a partnership with a man he’s never met. He can only hope that his new husband will be up for the challenge.
Restaurant manager Eiran never expected to be on a plane and heading towards his new life within days of the old King’s death. Although being chosen as the King’s consort was definitely an honour, it was one he expected to happen many years down the road. Now he has to learn not only how to navigate the political machine that is his new husband’s life, he has to learn all about his new husband, all while in the public eye.
So, this was my first gryphon shifter book and I have to say, I really enjoyed it. I thought it was quite unique for the characters to be able to take on different forms, instead of only being able to shift to gryphon. You don’t see that much in PNR stories, so I thought it was a nice touch. In addition, the light fantasy/PNR elements were done perfectly with the world building happening organically in conjunction with the story.
Given that this is a Dreamspun book (a line I haven’t had much luck with in the past), my expectations were kind of lowered in terms of the quality of the story, but I was pleasantly surprised to find myself enjoying this one. It helps to be a fan of PNR, of course, but all credit to the author for creating a world that was easy to slip into and for writing characters that were engaging and interesting.
The relationship with Luca and Eiran felt kinda perfect. Although meeting as strangers, there is definitely an attraction between them, which is helpful when they’re about to be married. But this didn’t feel like insta-lust, which I generally find to be annoying. It’s more like an instant connection and a respect for each other that blooms quickly into something more. However you want to describe it, I liked it a lot.
Although political machinations throw this new couple for a loop, I liked the way they worked things out. This is not a long, angsty story, so things are resolved fairly quickly. But I appreciated how their troubles didn’t drag on for ages. The focus of the Dreamspun line is romance and HEA’s, and both are here in spades.
If you enjoy PNR and you’re looking for something light with a happy ending (and really, who doesn’t these days), you will enjoy The Gryphon King’s Consort. It’s kind of a balm for the long, dark nights of winter and something you can easily curl up with when you need a comfort read.
Jenn Burke has loved out-of-this-world romance since she was a preteen and first read about heroes and heroines kicking butt and falling in love. Now that she’s an author, she couldn’t be happier to bring adventure, romance, and sexy times to her readers.
She’s been called a pocket-sized and puntastic Canadian on social media, and she’ll happily own that label. Jenn lives just outside of Ottawa, Ontario, with her husband and two kids, plus two dogs named after video game characters… because her geekiness knows no bounds.
